Rosehip Seed Oil – my first love in plant oils

This wonderful oil, extracted from the seeds of the juicy rosehips was probably the first carrier oil I learnt about, and fell in love with. When I worked in my first health food shop there was one brand in a small white bottle, in a small white box that we sold so much of. This was clearly something I needed to learn about, something lots of our customers knew about already!

Rosehip seed oil is one of the most widely used plant oils in natural skincare. It is a light and dry oil, suitable for all skin types and packed with antioxidants, and essential fats:

Beta-carotene gives the unrefined oil a deep red colour, this powerful antioxidant is a precursor (necessary for the production of) vitamin A (retinol) in the skin. A well-known skin nutrient which speeds up cell turnover, resulting in plumper, more toned and resilient skin. It also helps with cell communication, vital in healing damage such as sun damage and scarring.

Vitamin C is a potent antioxidant which protects and heals damage from our environment (the sun and pollution). Applied topically it boosts collagen and elastin production resulting in smoother and plumper (less wrinkles) skin. Vitamin C is also effective as reducing and preventing pigmentation, by targeting the melanin producing cells. It’s a great cell energizer too giving a wonderful, healthful radiance to the skin.

Essential fats (omegas 3, 6, 7 and 9) help the skin in 2 main ways. They are a vital component of cell tissue growth and collagen synthesis, giving skin it’s structure. They are also needed in the production of prostaglandins, these are our bodies main anti-inflammatory agents. So great for inflammation in sensitive, acne prone and aging skin.

Being a light, dry oil it is very quickly absorbed by the skin. It balances oil production so nourishing for dry skin but also helps to balance excess oil production in oily skin – a real all-rounder!
